SGURRENERGY, a Glasgow-based renewable energy specialist, is seeking to get some uplift from President Barack Obama’s $1 trillion (£676 billion) stimulus package with the launch of an American operation.

The company is opening its first US office tomorrow morning, with the help of Scottish Development International.

Jim Tolan, a project engineer at SgurrEnergy, will lead the Boston operation. The firm is looking to advise clients on all aspects of renewable energy, including onshore and offshore wind projects, solar power, bioenergy and wave and tidal power.

The firm anticipates strong demand for its expertise in offshore wind power – a sector that is still in its infancy in the US, compared to Europe.

President Obama has prioritised energy efficiency and renewable energy as part of his economic stimulus programme. This is partly for environment reasons but also in order to reduce dependence on imported oil.

Tolan believes Obama’s stimulus package, taken with his administrations green strategy, “will lead to a sustained period of growth in the renewable energy sector in the US.”

Ian Irvine, SgurrEnergy’s co-founder and technical director, said: “We believe that the US will become a key market for us in the long term.”
