NYC is lucky, as is most of the United States.

I live in Asia. Unfortunately, in this part of the world bottled water is a fact of life.

There are only three countries here where you can trust the water out of the tap - Japan, Singapore and Australia.

As for the rest of Asian countries, the water is questionable at best. Hotel rooms always have 'free' bottled water in them.

It was Europe that started the ridiculous bottled water trend. The only bottled water I ever saw in the US as a child was fizzy - ie Perrier and seltzer water / club soda (the latter, used as a mixer or at a soda fountain, for eggcreams).

As a young visitor to France, Italy and the UK in the 80's, I was given the impression that drinking tap water was at best declassé and at worst, unhealthy. Bottled water eventually caught on in the US as well.

But everyone knows New York City tap water is better than any bottled water.
